Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact Release Date, Price, Specs and Features
Sony launched the Xperia XZ1 flagship and XZ1 Compact devices on August 31st at IFA 2017 which took place at Berlin. The Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are the successors of XZ1 and XZ1 compact respectively.
Usually, Sony releases the flagship smart phones at IFA events. So the Japanese tech giant may unveil Xperia XZ2 at the IFA 2018 event which is going to take place from August 31st to 5th September, 2018. Xperia XZ2 may arrive with some exciting features like bezelless display, Dual Camera setup and Android P.
The Xperia XZ1 flagship arrived with the 5.2 inch IPS LCD Display with FullHD resolution just like its predecessor. But Sony may launch the successor of XZ1 with improved Display and almost no side bezels. Sony XZ2 probably come with the 5.2 inch Triluminos LCD Display and may sport the 2K resolution instead of FHD resolution.
Due to high resolution, the Display drinks much battery juice, Sony should do necessary optimizations to reduce Battery drain. The Display of Sony XZ2 will be HDR10 compliant, so that users can watch the HDR content on XZ2. The Corning Gorilla Glass 5 will serve as protection for the gorgeous Display of XZ2.
Sony Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact flagships might be powered by the next high-end Chipset from Qualcomm, Snapdragon 845. Qualcomm is yet to announce the Snapdragon 845 chipset, but already started the mass production of Snapdragon 845 SoC for the upcoming Galaxy S9, according to some rumours.
A leaked report claims that Snapdragon 845 will be an Octa Core chipset with Cortex A-75 and A-55 cores. Qualcomm is going use BIG.little architecture with these cores. A latest report from Fudzilla claims that Snapdragon 845 is a 10nm chipset like its predecessor. Previously, some rumours claim that Snapdragon 845 might be built on 7nm process, but the industry Sources say that it is simple too early to built a chipset on 7nm process. So the successor of SD 845 might be built on 7nm process, according to Fudzilla.
So due to the 10nm node technology, Snapdragon 845 availabilty won’t be a problem, so that Xperia XZ2 shipping time will be reduced. Due to 10nm node SD 845, Xperia XZ2 will use power efficiently than the 14nm chipsets. The leaked benchmarks of Snapdragon 845 reveals the single core score of 2600 points in Geekbench 4. The predecessor of XZ2 scores about 1900 in the Single Core Geekbench 4 test. So Xperia XZ2 might score atleast 650 points higher than XZ1. That’s whooping 30% increase in single core performance. So the upcoming flagship from Sony will offer outstanding performance along with many awesome features.
Snapdragon 845 also contains Adreno 630 GPU, which is more powerful over its predecessor.
X20 LTE Modem
According to Android Headlines, Snapdragon 845 SoC is coming with the X20 LTE Modem. Qualcomm announced the X20 Modem in February 2017 which supports great 4G speeds. X20 LTE Modem supports Cat. 18 download speeds up to 1.2 GBPS and Cat. 13 upload speeds up to 150 MBPS. The modem is built on 10nm FinFET process and supports 2x20MHz carrier aggregation.
X20 modem also supports Qualcomm Snapdragon Upload+, VoLTE, HD and UltraHD voice features. Qualcomm X20 Modem supports LTE FDD, LTE TDD cellular technologies in addition to LTE-U. Integrated Dual SIM Dual VoLTE feature of the modem supports Ultra HD Voice for both device sim ports.
More details about Snapdragon 845 SoC will be revealed in coming days.
Sony Xperia XZ1 sports 19MP Rear Camera with LED flash and 13MP Front Camera. Sony may use Dual 19MP Camera sensors as the Primary Camera in Xperia XZ2. Due to Dual Camera sensors, depth of the picture is increased and can also create the Bokeh effect.
The Sony XZ2 flagship can take good pictures in also low light due to Low light performance. The flagship may also support 4K video recording at 30fps and 2K recording at both 60 and 30 fps. More details about both the Cameras of XZ2 and XZ2 Compact will be revealed in coming days.
Sony recently unveiled Xperia XZ1 flagship with pre-loaded Android 8.0 Oreo and will update to Android 8.1 Oreo soon. Sony always use near stock android with modest UI changes in its flagship devices. The Android P operating system which will be the Ninth major iteration of Android is one of the great features of Xperia XZ2 flagship. Full details of Android P haven’t revealed yet, but according to the latest rumours, the Search Giant already started working on the successor of Android Oreo. Probably, Android P will bring some security improvements and new elegant features just like Android Oreo. The minutiae of the Android P OS might be revealed soon, as Google may release the first developer preview in March 2018.
Sony uses Non-removable 2700 mAh Li-Ion battery in the Xperia XZ1 flagship. The successor of XZ1 might be powered by 3000 mAh Li-Ion battery with Quick Charge 4 support. Due to the Quick charge support, the Sony XZ2 flagship can be charged at much faster rates than its predecessor.
Quick Charge 4 Plus and Stamina Mode
Sony unveiled both Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact flagships with Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 support, although the Snapdragon 835 supports QC4. So it seems that the Japanese tech giant saved the latest iteration of QC for the 2018’s flagship. As Snapdragon 845 Mobile platform which will power XZ2, supports QC4+, we can expect much faster charging and long battery life.
The Quick Charge 4+ is very power efficient, due to the Dual charge tech. Qualcomm claims that the Dual Charge feature reduces thermal dissipation very much and QC4+ is 30% more energy efficient than its predecessor. Because of the Intelligent Thermal Balancing feature, QC4+ manages to charge via the coolest path and reduces heating of battery. So the battery of Xperia XZ2 won’t get heated much even during charging via Quick Charger.
Due to the smarter charging technology of Sony, the battery will charge upto 90%, stay there and again charges upto 100% before we wake up in the morning. Thus, wear and tear the battery decreases much and stays at full capacity for longer time.
Sony Xperia XZ2 will feature both Stamina Mode and Ultra Stamina Mode for extreme battery saving measures. By using Stamina mode, the user can save battery juice much and the Ultra Stamina Mode can be used for special occassions to save a huge amount of battery juice. Ultra Stamina Mode disables Wi-Fi, Mobile Data and applies other extreme measures to save battery juice.

The Japanese tech giant may launch a 256 GB internal memory variant of XZ1 with a price tag of $1000. The price of basic 64GB storage variant might start from $750, according to our predictions. The Xperia XZ1 Compact will come with a price tag far lesser than the XZ1. The official price list of the upcoming flagship from Sony will be revealed in coming months.
