Galaxy S9 Specs, Features and Release Date
Galaxy S9 is the upcoming flagship from Samsung, Ninth iteration in the Galaxy S series. It is the successor of recently unveiled Galaxy S8.
The latest flagship of Samsung, Galaxy S8 arrived with infinity display with 18.5:9 ratio and no side bezels. It also features 5.8 inch SuperAMOLED display with 1440 x 2960 resolution. So Samsung probably introduce some elegant features like iris scanner, 4K display in Galaxy S9. So now we will roundup some rumoured features and specs of S9.

Display and Resolution
Latest rumours are saying that Samsung is manufacturing 4K mobile displays internally. So it seems that the South Korean tech giant is going to introduce 4K smart phone displays with Galaxy S9. Some reliable reports told that Samsung is trying to achive 90% screen to body ratio. In the latest Galaxy S8 flagship, Samsung achived 84% screen to body ratio. So Galaxy S9 may come with 5.8 inch Super AMOLED Display with UltraHD resolution and no side bezels like Galaxy S8. Bezelless Samsung S9 will appear more gorgeous and innovative than previous S series devices. Corning Gorilla Glass 5 acts as the display protection for Samsung S9.

Processor and Ram
Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus flagships in the US will be powered by the next high-end Chipset from Qualcomm, Snapdragon 845. Qualcomm is yet to announce the Snapdragon 845 chipset. Recently leaked report claims that Snapdragon 845 will be an Octa Core chipset with Cortex A-75 and A-55 cores. Qualcomm is going use BIG.little architecture with these cores. According to the report, Snapdragon 845 will be built on 10nm LPP process, so it will be more power efficient. Snapdragon 845 also contains Adreno 630 GPU, which is more powerful over its predecessor. It will also contain the X16 LTE Modem which is a Gigabyte class LTE modem.
X20 LTE Modem
According to Android Headlines, Snapdragon 845 SoC comes with X20 LTE Modem. Qualcomm announced the X20 Modem in February 2017 which supports great 4G speeds. X20 LTE Modem supports Cat. 18 download speeds up to 1.2 GBPS and Cat. 13 upload speeds up to 150 MBPS. The modem is built on 10nm FinFET process and supports 2x20MHz carrier aggregation. It also supports Qualcomm Snapdragon Upload+, VoLTE, HD and UltraHD voice features. X20 Modem supports LTE FDD, LTE TDD cellular technologies in addition to LTE-U. Integrated Dual SIM Dual VoLTE feature of the modem supports Ultra HD Voice for both device sim ports.

Galaxy S9 may come with dual 16MP Cameras on Rear with LED flash and 8MP front Camera with LED flash. With dual image processors on the rear, the image quality and special effects are also much better. The S9 flagship might also support 8K video recording on rear side. Front camera supports 2K video recording and HDR features. Samsung improve aperture and lens much better in the S9 than its predecessors. So the angle and zoom of Camera might be improved.
Samsung used eMMC 5.0 and 5.1 flash storages in the Galaxy S lineup, prior to Galaxy S7. With Galaxy S7, Samsung introduced the UFS 2.1 flash memory for first time. Read speeds of UFS 2.1 flash storage of Galaxy S7 beats most of last year flagships. Latest rumours are saying that Samsung also going to use UFS 2.1 flash memory in Galaxy S8. So in Galaxy S9 flagship also we can see UFS 2.1 flash storage. Samsung may further improve read and write speeds of UFS storage to rival SSDs. Samsung S7 flagship may come in 64 GB, 128 GB and 256 GB internal memory variants. There might be no 32GB variant and microSD card support to extend memory.
Samsung shifted the fingerprint sensor to the rear side of the device in Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus. That is probably due to the infinity Display with no side bezels. The new location of Fingerprint Sensor in S8 is right next to the Camera Lens. But some users and tech reviewers claim that the fingerprint sensor is not working well. So the South Korean tech giant may again shift the fingerprint sensor in the upcoming flagship. Samsung possibly shift it to the front side of the device or relocate it on the rear side. Samsung will also improve the accuracy and speed of the Fingerprint Sensor with the next iteration in Galaxy S series. Stacked Motherboard Design
According to the report from ET News (Industry Sources) Samsung Galaxy S9 Exynos version might come with a stacked motherboard. Some latest leaks claim that Apple iPhone 8 is also coming with a stacked motherboard and the L-shaped battery supplied from LG. Now it seems that Samsung is going to do that magic with Galaxy S9. The prime benefit of this motherboard design is that it occupies lesser space than the previous design, so the battery capacity could be increased. But the latest report suggests that currently the Snapdragon chipsets are having technical difficulties with the advanced system boards. So the Exynos variant of Galaxy S9 is going to come with the benefits of the stacked motherboard design at least for now.
Samsung introduced the iris scanner feature with the Eighth iteration in Galaxy S series. Galaxy S9 will also support the iris scanner feature, according to some leaked reports. Samsung is going to improve iris scanner by refining both Hardware and Software. With Iris scanner, users can easily unlock the device. By using Iris Scanner, users can also make payments in a more secure way. To unlock the device, users just have to align the eyes with the circles on the screen. Samsung S9 may come with 3500mAh Non-removable Li-Po battery to provide enough power for its large Display.
Quick Charge 4 Plus
Qualcomm introduced Quick Charge 4+ which is an incremental upgrade over Quick Charge 4. New Quick Charge 4+ feature will come with Snapdragon 835 SoC. Qualcomm claims that Quick Charge 4+ will be 15 percent faster and 30 percent power efficient than its predecessor. With Quick Charge 4+, users can charge up to 50 percent in less than 15 minutes. Power dissipation through heat also reduced much in the latest iteration of Quick Charge.
Quick Charge 4+ also has advanced safety features which monitor case and Connector temperature. So it prevents short circuit and the damage of Type-C connector. With Intelligent thermal balancing, QC 4+ charges via coolest path and eliminates hot spots. Improved dual charge feature reduces charge time by about 15 percent compared to its predecessor. So Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus flagships will charge faster and also at cooler temperatures.
The successor of Galaxy S8 will surely come with the Oreo operating system which is the latest flavour of Android. Due to many performance improvements, Android Oreo makes device boot almost twice as fast and also provides fluid like experience to users. In the eighth major iteration of Android, Google made many refinements to launch swiftly by clearing the app cache automatically. So Galaxy S9 with Android Oreo will provide a whole new flagship smart phone experience to users.
Due to the Project Treble of Android Oreo, Samsung S9 will receive future updates quickly. Even, the carrier locked Galaxy S9 devices will also receive further Android updates quickly. Samsung S9 will be more secure than its predecessor, due to the exclusive security features of Android 8.0. 64GB internal memory variant of Galaxy S9 may come with price tag around $800. 128GB Internal memory variant might be priced around $900. 256GB inteenal memory variant might be priced around $1000. Confirmed price details of Samsung S9 will be revealed in coming months.
According to latest rumours, Galaxy S9 might be unveiled in MWC 2018 which will take place in February or March of 2018. So it may be available to buy from April 2018. Exact release dates of Galaxy S9 series will be revealed soon.

According to Sammobile, the upcoming Galaxy S flagship is code named as Star. Star 2 is the Codename of the Galaxy S9 Plus flagship. The leak claims that Galaxy S9 has entered into development phase already and also 3 to 4 months earlier than the previous schedule. Samsung S9 and S9 Plus also come with much improved infinity display. Samsung may follow the design of the upcoming Note 8 in designing the upcoming S9 flagship.
Update on 11/6/2017 :
Gizbot claims that Snapdragon 845 SoC will come in January 2018. A Wiebo Post also suggested that Qualcomm is going to release Snapdragon 836 with minor improvements over 835 in July and SD 845 in January 2018. So it seems that Snapdragon 845 is going to power all 2018 flagships like Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9, LG G7 and HTC U12. It also confirms that Qualcomm is already building Snapdragon 845 chipset in association with Samsung. The leak also suggested that Snapdragon 845 chipset will be built on 10nm FinFET process.
Update on 25/7/2017 : Dual Camera Sensor set
According to The Investor, Samsung will use dual sensor rear cameras in its upcoming flagships including Galaxy S9 and Note 9. An analyst from South Korea revealed key information about Galaxy Note 8 Primary Camera. Samsung Note 8 will sport 12MP telephoto lens and a 13MP wide-angle set for 3D Mapping, low light performance and distance measurements. A previous patent of Samsung indicates optical stabilization and 3x zooming abilities. The analyst also said that the dual Camera setup of Samsung will offer better performance than other dual camera phones on the market. So Samsung may use the same Dual Sensor setup for Galaxy S9 and Note 9 flagships too.
Update 5/8/2017 :
Samsung announced the new home made LTE Modem with 6 Carrier aggregation support. The maximum download speed of this modem is 1.2 Gbps. So the new LTE modem from Samsung achieves Category 18 download speeds. Samsung also announced that the Exynos 9 processors containing the modem will be in the stage of mass production by the end of this year. So the next year flagships from Samsung including Galaxy Note 9 and Galaxy S9 will come with the Exynos 9 chipsets containing Cat. 18 LTE Modem. But the US carriers like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint are still supporting up to 3 Carrier aggregation only on flagship devices like Galaxy S7 and iPhone 7. So it takes so much time for the carriers to support 6 CA LTE speeds.
Update on 12/9/2017 :
According to Phonearena, the most awaited foldable smartphone will arrive from Samsung in 2018. In an event of Note 8 in South Korea, Samsung’s top Mobile executive, Koh Dong-jin says this news about the future roadmap. Back at CES 2011, Samsung unveiled the bendable OLED screen which is the major requisite for a foldable smart phone. Some tech analysts, say that the next Galaxy Note or S series flagship might be foldable. So we can expect that either Galaxy Note 9 or Galaxy S9 might be the World’s first foldable smartphone. But the South Korean tech giant may begin a new lineup with the foldable smart phone.
Update on 20/9/2017 :
A recent report from Korean publication ET News says that the Galaxy S9 will come with super slow motion Image sensor capable of recording at 1,000 fps. The Industry sources claim that the new sensor production will allegedly begin in November. The new image sensor consists of three layers : logic chip, the image sensor and a DRAM chip. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium sports almost the same sensor which is capable of recording at 960fps. If this news really true, Galaxy S9 will beat its rival iPhone X, which is capable of recording FullHD video at 240fps slow motion. But as we have no confirmation from Samsung, we should take this with a pinch of salt. If Samsung S9 arrive with the 1,000 fps image sensor, Galaxy Note 9 might come with this sensor too.
Update on 4/10/2017 :
According to Android Headlines Blog, the upcoming flagship System on Chip (SoC) from Qualcomm, is going to be clocked at 2.5 Ghz. The information comes from an Industry insider from China, so it seems that Qualcomm might stick with the same base clock speeds of Snapdragon 835 for its successor too. Previously, Snapdragon 821 maximally clocked at 2.35 Ghz and the clock speed is increased in SD 835 to 2.45 Ghz. SnapDragon 835 is 27% much faster than its predecessor and also energy efficient due to increased clock speeds and 10nm LPE node process.
Now if really, Snapdragon 845 comes with the clock speed of 2.5 Ghz according to the rumour, we may see only marginal increase in performance. But some rumours are flying that SD 845 will be built on TSMC’s 7nm process as per the recently signed agreement between two companies. If Snapdragon 845 is built on 7nm process, we will see massive reduction in energy usage and the chip size also decreases. All major flagship phones of 2018 like Galaxy S9, LG G7, HTC U12, Note 9, Xperia XZ2 and Google Pixel 3 will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 SoC. As these are still rumours, we have to take them with a grain of salt.

Some rumours claim that Snapdragon 845 chipset allegedly visits the Geekbench and beats Apple A9 chipset in single core benchmark tests. According to Sources like notebookcheck, Wccftech, Firstpost, the user ice-Universe of chinese microblogging site, Weibo originally posted this news. The latest chipset from Qualcomm, Snapdragon 835 scores around 2000 points in the single core benchmark tests while the new reports say that Snapdragon 845 scores above 2600 points in Geekbench 4 single core test. The Apple A9 chipset in the iPhone 6S scores 2500 in the Single core Geekbench 4.
The Apple A10 chipset in the iPhone 7 scores about 3400 points and A11 bionic chipset in iPhone 8 and X scores about 4100 points respectively in Geekbench 4 scores. So the single core score of Snapdragon 845 is much lower compared to the Apple’s latest chipsets but the multi-core score may be on-par with the score of A11 Bionic chipset from Apple. However, the multicore scores of SD 845 haven’t revealed so far.

Samsung has unveiled new ISOCell Image sensors with many refinements and these new sensors are expected to be in the Samsung’s next year flagships like Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9. The new Image sensors are much slimmer than the previous ones and are more suitable for bezelless, large Display flagships, according to Sammobile. One of the newly arrived image sensors is with 24 MP resolution and the other one is with 12MP Resolution. The features of the 12MP sensor include 1.28-micrometer, 12-megapixel ISOCELL Fast 2L9 with Dual Pixel technology and the features of 24MP sensor include ultra-small 0.9μm, 24-megapixel ISOCELL Slim 2X7 with Tetracell technology.
The 12MP sensor with the Dual Pixel tech can do ultra-fast auto-focus at reduced pixel size from 1.4μm to 1.28μm. Besides that the sensor can also create in-depth pictures with Bokeh effect similar to recent Pixel 2 XL.
The 24MP sensor with Tetracell technology which enables to shot bright pictures in low-light environments and detailed pictures in bright environments. Due to reduced pixel size of 0.9μm, the Sensor occupies less space and can be fitted in a smartphone with any Camera bump.
Phonearena says that any one of the two sensors or both sensors might be present in the Galaxy S9 flagship. The same trend may follow in Galaxy Note 9 and S9+ too.

Another leak through Phonearena suggests that Qualcomm is going to unveil the Snapdragon 845 chipset on 4th December. The event will take place at Snapdragon Technology Summit on Maoyi Island, according to a leaked invitation letter in Chinese microblogging site Weibo. So official details about the specs of the most anticipated flagship from Qualcomm which powers almost all next year’s flagships will be revealed in a few weeks.
Latest rumours claim that Snapdragon 845 might contain four Cortex-A75 cores and four Cortex-A53 cores optimized exclusively to provide 25% better performance than SD835. The chipset will be built either on 10nm LPE process or Samsung’s 10nm LPP process. Another futuristic feature of SD845 is the Qualcomm X20 LTE modem which supports 1.2 Gbps download speeds through carrier aggregation.
