The Search Giant released the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL flagships made by HTC and LG respectively on October 19th, 2017 with pre-installed stock Android 8.0 Oreo. Obviously, the successor of the Pixel 2 will come in 2018, unless Google ditched the Pixel program. The rumours about Google Pixel 3 flagships have started flying since the launch of Pixel 2.
Now we will see what new features and specs the next flagship smart phone from Google might bring.
Display and Design
Google may totally revamp the design in the 2018 flagship. The third iteration in the Pixel lineup may probably come with the bezel less design and metal unibody. The display might be similar to Samsung’s Infinity Display and LG’s Full vision display. The Pixel 3 may sport 6 inch Super AMOLED Display with QHD+ resolution. Due to the high pixel density, the Display of Pixel 3 will appear gorgeous. The front and rear sides of the device will be covered by the Corning Gorilla Glass for protection and premium look.
As Android P Developer Preview 1 arrived with the Notch support, it seems that Pixel 3 is going to sport a notch on the top of the display just like iPhone X. So Google Pixel 3 may feature 18:9 aspect ratio Display with notch on the top to accommodate the sensors and Front Camera.
Google Pixel 1 flagship was powered by Snapdragon 821 and Pixel 2 is powered by Snapdragon 835 chipsets. The successor of Pixel 2 will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset which is the flagship chipset from Qualcomm. Some recent leaks confirmed that Pixel 3 flagship will come with SD845 mobile platform.
Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 845 chipset in December 2017, with mind-blowing improvements over its predecessor. Due to 10nm LPP FinFET process of Samsung, the SD 845 mobile platform. According to official specs, Snapdragon 845 contains Eight custom Kryo 385 cores which are based on Cortex A-75 cores. Of them, four cores are clocked at 2.8 Ghz and the remaining are clocked at 1.9 Ghz. Qualcomm implemented the new DynamiQ cluster technology in Snapdragon 845.
The chipset contains X20 LTE modem which is the most powerful 4G modem from Qualcomm, which breaks the Gigabyte barrier. The modem supports 1.2 Gbps, Cat. 18 download speeds and 150 Mbps upload speeds with carrier aggregation.
Snapdragon 845 contains dedicated AI processing support and neural network support. The Hexagon 685 DSP of SD845 contain notable features like Hexagon All-Ways Aware Hub (Sensor), Qualcomm Snapdragon Neural Processing Engine. Being the third generation moble AI platform, Snapdragon 845 sports more than incremental improvements over its predecessor. The Snapdragon 845 chipset supports all popular neural networks like Tensor Flow, Tensor FlowLite, Caffe, Caffe 2 and Open Neural Network Exchange (ONNE).
The Google Pixel 3 flagship may come with 6 GB Ram and in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB internal memory variants. Due to 6 GB Ram, split screen multitasking and Picture in Picture mode will work fluid like in the next Pixel.
Camera is one of the awesome features of Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL devices. Google created the Bokeh effect (background blurring) without using dual Camera setup on the rear. Google used special software to create Bokeh effect perfectly. The upcoming Pixel 3 might also feature the same 12.2 MP primary Camera with Dual LED flash which is present in Pixel 2.
Google may improve the aperture size and pixel size of the Camera sensor to increase quality of pictures. The next smart phone from Google may also support 3D scanning feature, according to some rumours. Currently, iPhone 8 and Xperia XZ1 sport the Camera sensor with 3D scanning feature support. More details about the Camera of Google Pixel 3 will be revealed in coming days.
Quick Charge 4 Plus
Qualcomm introduced Quick Charge 4+ which is an incremental upgrade over Quick Charge 4. New Quick Charge 4+ feature comes with Snapdragon 835 SoC may come with SD 845 too. Qualcomm claims that Quick Charge 4+ will be 15 percent faster and 30 percent power efficient than its predecessor. With Quick Charge 4+, users can charge up to 50 percent in less than 15 minutes. Power dissipation through heat also reduced much in the latest iteration of Quick Charge.
Quick Charge 4+ also has advanced safety features which monitor case and Connector temperature. So it prevents short circuit and the damage of Type-C connector. With Intelligent thermal balancing, QC 4+ charges via coolest path and eliminates hot spots. Improved dual charge feature reduces charge time by about 15 percent compared to its predecessor. So the 2018 Pixel flagships will charge faster and also at cooler temperatures.
The Android P operating system which might the Ninth major iteration of Android is one of the great features of Pixel 3 flagship. Full details of Android P haven’t revealed yet, but according to the latest rumours, the Search Giant already started work on the successor of Android Oreo. Probably, Android P will bring some security improvements and new elegant features just like its predecessors. The minutiae of the Android P OS might be revealed soon, as Google may release the first developer preview in March 2018.
The Search giant launched the Pixel flagship with Android Nougat in October 2016. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL flagships were launched on October 19th, the shipping has already started in many regions. So the Pixel 3 flagship may also arrive early or mid October 2018 and hit the shelves in late-October.
The 32GB variant of Pixel 2 is expected to come with a price tag of above $649. Apple iPhone X arrives with a price tag of $999. So it seems that the next flagship from Google will come with a higher price tag than its predecessors. The price of the 64GB internal memory variant of Google Pixel 3 might start from $800 and 256GB variant may cost upto $1100. The confirmed price list of the Pixel 3 series will be revealed in coming days.
Update on 4/10/2017 :
According to Android Headlines Blog, the upcoming flagship System on Chip (SoC) from Qualcomm, is going to be clocked at 2.5 Ghz. The information comes from an Industry insider from China, so it seems that Qualcomm might stick with the same base clock speeds of Snapdragon 835 for its successor too. Previously, Snapdragon 821 maximally clocked at 2.35 Ghz and the clock speed is increased in SD 835 to 2.45 Ghz. SnapDragon 835 is 27% much faster than its predecessor and also energy efficient due to increased clock speeds and 10nm LPE node process.
Now if really, Snapdragon 845 comes with the clock speed of 2.5 Ghz according to the rumour, we may see only marginal increase in performance. But some rumours are flying that SD 845 will be built on TSMC’s 7nm process as per the recently signed agreement between two companies. If Snapdragon 845 is built on 7nm process, we will see massive reduction in energy usage and the chip size also decreases. All major flagship phones of 2018 like Galaxy S9, LG G7, HTC U12, Note 9, Xperia XZ2 and Google Pixel 3 will be powered by the Snapdragon 845 SoC. As these are still rumours, we have to take them with a grain of salt.
